A large yard looks appealing, but daily life with a pet also depends on the route to the door, the stairs, the flooring, and a place to clean muddy paws. During a showing, imagine the first ten minutes of your morning and the last outing of the evening. Would the layout make those routines easier?

Check the boundaries

Look at gates, gaps under fences, and access from the house to outdoor space. Note anything that would need repair or redesign before move-in. A fence that works for one dog may not work for another. Outdoor space also needs an assessment for your pet's needs, including shade, plants, and potential escape routes.

Read the rules before committing

For a condominium or other association property, obtain and review the actual governing documents. Ask questions about pet provisions and shared spaces rather than relying on a listing description. If a rule could affect your household, get clarification during your due-diligence period. Different properties can have very different requirements.

Visit the surroundings

Walk the route you would actually use, considering traffic, pavement, lighting, and access to places that allow pets. In San Pedro and Rancho Palos Verdes, a beautiful setting can still involve slopes or stairs that change your routine. Bring a short checklist to each showing so a charming kitchen does not distract you from the practical features your whole household needs.
